How a Sandline tournament works
Most sand volleyball tournaments make you bring your own team of four. That's a barrier — you have to find three friends, coordinate schedules, and convince everyone to commit. We do it differently.
You sign up as an individual. When registration closes the night before, we randomly assign players to balanced teams. Show up tournament morning, find your team's color, and start warming up. Want to play with a specific friend? Add their name when you register and we'll do our best to keep you together.
The day runs in two stages:
- Pool play (morning). Teams are split into pools. Each team plays every other team in their pool, single game to 21. This guarantees every team plays at least three games regardless of skill.
- Single-elimination bracket (afternoon). Top teams from each pool advance. We run semis, a final, and a third-place game. The bracket and live scores update on a public page you can share with friends watching from home.
Typical tournament wraps in 4–5 hours. Bring water, sunscreen, and shoes you can play in (or play barefoot — your call).
Why free-agent
We tried both formats and free-agent wins every time for a one-day event in our community. Three reasons:
- Anyone can join. No need to recruit three friends — show up alone and you've still got a team waiting.
- Teams are balanced. Random draft keeps any single team from being a ringer squad that demolishes the bracket.
- You meet new people. Pre-formed teams keep cliques together. Random teams force the kind of mixing that builds the community.
If you've played in beach tournaments where one team of friends wins everything, you'll feel the difference immediately. The play is genuinely competitive at the top of the bracket, but pool play stays friendly enough that beginners aren't getting wrecked.
Who plays
Everyone from first-timers to ex-college players. The free-agent draft balances teams, so you're never the one weak link on a team of pros (or the one ringer carrying four beginners).
If you've never played in any kind of tournament before, this is a friendly way to start. Tell us when you register and we'll make sure your first matches are with patient teammates. If you're a seasoned player, you'll still find competitive games in the bracket — Tulsa has more good sand players than people realize.
Minimum age 18, or 16+ with a parent present.
Entry fee & prizes
Entry fees vary by tournament — check the specific event page for current pricing and prize details. Most events run in the $20–$30 per player range and pay out the top team(s) with a cash pot or prize. Payment is via Venmo; you're not paid up until we mark you confirmed in the app.
All registration happens through your Sandline account. Sign up once, register for any tournament after that.
Refunds: If you can't make it, withdraw at least 48 hours before the event for a full refund. Inside that window we can't refund (we've already locked in teams and court bookings), but you'll get credit toward the next event.
Weather: Sand volleyball happens rain or shine if the courts are playable. If we have to cancel for weather, you get a full refund or credit toward the next event — your choice.
About Sandline
Sandline is a Tulsa-grown sand volleyball community. We run weekly free pickup at the TU sand courts year-round and host one-day tournaments throughout the season. The whole thing is built on the idea that organized volleyball in Tulsa shouldn't require you to know the right people, find the right Facebook group, or commit to a 10-week league before you've even played once.
Tournaments are our way of giving the community something to point at — a real event where you sign up, train for it (if you want), show up with your friends, and have a story to tell on Monday morning.
