Where to find us
Pickup almost always runs on the sand volleyball courts at the University of Tulsa (TU). Before you head out, check your RSVP or the home screen in the Sandline app for the exact spot — that's where we post the week's location, and on the rare occasion we move courts, you'll see it there first. (So: TU courts unless we say otherwise.)
The courts are outdoor and we play rain-or-shine when they're playable. If you've never met up with us before, look for the orange Sandline shirts when you get there — someone will know what's going on and get you onto a court.
Who shows up
The honest answer: a mix. Some people played in college and want to keep playing. Some haven't touched a volleyball since high school gym class. Most are somewhere in between — beginners and intermediates who want to play, sweat, and meet people on a Saturday morning.
We sort teams to keep games competitive. If you're brand new, you won't end up on a court with four ex-college players smoking the ball at you. If you're experienced, we'll match you with people who can keep up. Nobody wants a blowout.
Solo players are very welcome. You don't need to bring a team or even a single friend. Most people show up alone the first time. Half the point of pickup is meeting people.
What to bring
- Water. Tulsa summers are no joke. Bring more than you think you need.
- Sunscreen. The sand reflects. You will burn.
- A hat or sunglasses. Optional but recommended for serving.
- Athletic clothes you don't mind getting sandy. Anything you'd wear to a workout works fine.
You don't need sand volleyball shoes — most people just go barefoot. The sand is soft and clean. If you have sensitive feet or it's a hot day, light shoes work too.
You don't need to bring a ball. We've got those.
First-timer questions
How a typical Saturday goes
Showing up around 9:50am is ideal — gives you time to stretch and meet a few people before games start.
We use a simple format: 4-on-4 sand volleyball, rally scoring to 21 (win by 2). Captains for the day rotate teams roughly every 30-40 minutes so you're not stuck with the same group all morning. Calls are honest — we don't play with refs. If you touched the net, just say so.
Most weeks we wrap up around noon. Some people stick around after to grab food nearby or just hang out by the courts.
Why we built Sandline
Sandline started because pickup was working great except for one thing: nobody knew if anyone else was coming until they showed up. Sometimes you'd drive across town and find three people. Sometimes thirty. There was no way to coordinate.
The Sandline app fixes that. RSVP for pickup so others know who's coming. See live headcount before you leave the house. After we play, results go in the app — your wins, losses, who you played with. It's a small thing, but it makes pickup actually reliable.
It's free. You don't have to use it to come — just show up. But if you want to know whether 5 or 25 people will be there before you make the drive, sign up.
Other ways to play volleyball in Tulsa
We're not the only volleyball in Tulsa, and we'll happily point you to other options:
- Sandline tournaments. We host one-day sand volleyball tournaments in Tulsa throughout the season — free-agent format, pool play into a bracket. See tournament details →
- Tulsa rec centers. Several of the city rec centers run indoor volleyball nights. Indoor is a different game than sand — slower, more positional, more team-based.
- Other Tulsa events. Pearl Beach Brew and a few other Tulsa spots host occasional sand volleyball through the warmer months. Follow our Instagram — we boost the good ones.
See you on the sand.
RSVP through the Sandline app so we know to expect you. First-timer? Mention it — someone will look out for you.
